Romain Lapeyre

Romain Lapeyre is a French cellist currently studying at the Royal Academy of Music of London.

Romain was born in Agen (south of France) in 1988. He graduated from the Bordeaux Conservatory in 2003, having received two first prizes with first class honours in cello and chamber music. After studying with Hélène Dautry, he received in June 2009 his Bachelor Degree of Musicology at the Sorbonne University in Paris.

Romain was appointed principal cello of the European Union Youth Orchestra (EUYO) since 2010. He has also appeared as leader of the OstinatO Orchestra, Prométhée Orchestra, NJO Summer Academy Orchestra and Royal Academy of Music Symphony Orchestra. He has played under many eminent conductors, notably, Sir Colin Davis, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Yan Pascal Tortelier, Christian Thielemann, Gianandrea Noseda, Vasily Petrenko, Andrew Litton and Claus Peter Flor. His orchestral work has enabled him to tour internationally, including performances at the Carnegie Hall of New York, the Symphony Hall of Boston, the Kennedy Center of Washington, the Royal Albert Hall of London (BBC Proms), the Konzerthaus of Berlin, the Concertgebouw of Amsterdam, the Châtelet Theatre of Paris, the Seoul Arts Center, the Kenmin Hall of Yokohama, the Dvořák Hall Rudolfinum of Prague and at the 2010 World Expo in Shanghaï.

Romain has performed in masterclasses conducted by numerous renowned performers and pedagogues, such as of Colin Carr, Robert Cohen, Gregor Horsch, Sung-Won Yang, Henri Demarquette, Xavier Gagnepain and Etienne Péclard. He has also benefited from playing in the chamber master classes of Christopher Hogwood, Pascal Devoyon, Olivier Charlier, Emmanuel Strosser, Simon Crawford-Philips and Carole Presland. Since September 2010, he has been studying at the Royal Academy of Music with Professor David Strange and has been the recipient of the Zara Nelsova award, the Harold Craxton Prize, the Herbert Walenn Prize and the President’s Club Scolarship. He his also a member of the Bastide Trio with Julien Lapeyre and Emmanuel Ferrer-Laloë.
