Farrenc: Overture in E minor, Op 23
Elgar: Cello Concerto
Stravinsky: The Firebird Suite (1945)

The Orchestra begins its autumn concert with an overture written by Louise Farrenc, a French composer and virtuoso pianist, born in Paris in 1804. She achieved considerable fame as a performer and teacher, being appointed Professor of Piano at the Paris Conservatory in 1842, a position she held for thirty years. After her death in 1875 her works were largely forgotten until the late 20th century when an interest in women composers led to a rediscovery. The Orchestra looks forward to performing her work.

The remainder of the programme includes two exciting, towering works of early 20th century music. The Orchestra is joined by the talented young cellist, Ariana Kashefi who performs Elgar’s Cello Concerto. This wonderful, lyrical piece was Elgar’s last major work, written and given its premiere almost exactly one hundred years ago. It has been hugely popular ever since the iconic Du Pre/Barbirolli 1965 recording.

The Orchestra also plays Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite, the piece with which Stravinsky announced his arrival on the world stage. It was also the first piece that Diaghilev commissioned for the Ballets Russes, whose influence continues to this day. An evening of gripping music making awaits you!
